Friday 19 March

Today sunrise was at 6.07am and sunset at 6.11pm. But the vernal equinox is tomorrow, 20 March. How very curious. But it seems there is something called equilux, which we have already passed. There is a very interesting explanation here: I learned a lot.

The intensity of light seems to me to be noticeable. Spring is in the air. To that end I visited the beautiful gardens of Nymans, a National Trust property. There were so many daffodils, hellebores, camellias, very pretty indeed. An amazing carpet of cyclamen:

I looked at my diary for last year, which I have been in the habit of doing to see how the Covid drama unravelled, and oddly enough I went to Nymans on exactly the same day in 2020 and commented on the magnolias. Magnificent this year too.

I have received some feedback on film music, and will now have to listen to the recommended tracks, as some of them are unknown to me. But what a jolly way to get to know new pieces of music. I heard part of Greig’s piano concerto today, and thought back to a wonderful trip to Norway in 2019, when I visited various places including Bergen: Greig’s house is on the outskirts overlooking a lake.

This was his summer house: he found Norway very cold in winter and moved to Copenhagen, or travelled around more southerly parts of Europe. He had a workshop overlooking the lake, and there is now a performance area just behind it. We heard a short concert of piano pieces. Very atmospheric.

And finally……….the maestro Arthur Rubinstein
