Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Although we are not really football aficianados, we did watch the whole match, including the excruciating penalties. I do so hate this way of ending a match. I think you might as well put straws in a hat, as it is a total lottery who wins. My little 9 year old foster grandson apparently sobbed uncontrollably when his heroes suffered collective defeat. This morning I guess half of England was nursing a thick head. Gary Lineker said as the penalty shootout was announced, you can either close your eyes or hide behind the sofa. I wish I had followed his advice.
It seems that lockdown rules will be lifted on 19 July in England, but with certain caveats:
“We cannot simply revert instantly from Monday July 19 to life as it was before Covid,” he said.
The prime minister added that he hoped the roadmap would be “irreversible” but “in order to have that, it has also got to be a cautious approach”.
So in other words, you will still be expected to wear a mask, maintain social distancing, not sing in church etc etc. The roadmap will be reversed: why make promises which won’t be kept? Anyway, I still anticipate ending my blog on 19 July. It is becoming too much of a daily journal of my fairly limited exploits, with the occasional railing against lockdown, because that is its raison d’etre. I will however keep the site open, just in case…….and do keep in touch with comments. You can also set up an email alert, which will let you know if I have any subsequent outbursts. I never did of course imagine that I would be writing daily for 16 months.
I heard this today: it brings tears to my eyes. Perhaps we are all a little fragile. I wonder when, if ever, we will be able to attend live performances like this again?
